The Holiday Spirt and Festive Music

We are going to join the good people at The Maine Table/Merry Manor Inn again this year to ring in the New Year in South Portland, Maine. They are offering an appetizer/dance package and a great room rate if you'd like to stay over! Call 207-774-6151 for details and reservations!

Dear Friends,

The weather outside is....

Brrrrrrrrrrr....It's the busy holiday music gigging season and we've had a blast of winter air, snow, sleet, ice and wind this week. On Tuesday, the Trio had back-to-back gigs in a sleet storm and the commutes, load-ins and load-outs were rough and slow-going, but the crowds were hardy and in great spirits.  Happy Winter, one and all!

On Monday, the Wreaths Across America escort/convoy passed through Maine and New Hampshire on its way to Arlington Cemetery in Washington D.C. with thousands of handmade balsam wreaths to place on Veterans' graves. I had the privilege of emceeing the Kittery Trading Post stop and performing my original song, "The Snow At Arlington." I had the honor of meeting the Grand Marshals of this year's escort, Vietnam Medal of Honor recipient, Col Roger Donlon and his wife, Norma. It was my 11th year participating in Wreaths Across America escort events and each year is more powerful.

The Wreaths Across America convoy arrives at Arlington on Saturday morning when thousands of volunteers gather to place wreaths on graves. Learn more and follow along at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org

If you're still on the hunt for Christmas music, both of my Christmas CDs are in stock! If you order from the Don Campbell Music site, we can ship to U.S. addresses within one business day!  Volume 1 was released in 2002 and has 18 songs, including 4 originals and 14 classics. Volume 2 was released in 2011 and has 2 originals (The Snow At Arlington and Christmas Lights) and 10 classics. Here's the link to the store at my website for song listings!

Wishing everyone a joyful season. Thank you for the gift of your friendship through music.

Music in celebration, healing and recognition

Dear Friends,

It's been a surreal week. Much of the State of Maine was left in the dark last Sunday night when powerful winds knocked out power to about two-thirds of the population. Over the week, the lights have come back on with the help of crews from all over the country and Canada. Seeing trees uprooted, snapped or twisted; wires down or hanging and telephone poles dangling reminds me of other storms I've witnessed in awe, and makes me think of my Dad, whose first job was with the telephone company installing telephone poles.

My Dad was a Marine. He served, came home to Maine, worked for and retired from the telephone company, raised three kids with my Mom, loved his grandson and was my best friend. I was with him in Florida when he died in late September 2009. Two days later, I flew back to New England to meet up with my bandmates on the road. My Dad didn't miss a day of work in his life. He'd have let me have it if I had missed a gig. The shows went on. Music is healing.

Our friend and Music of Dan Fogelberg show bandmate, Kris Rodgers, lost his father this week to a rare lung disease. It was diagnosed just two weeks before his death. Mike was 57. When I met Kris in early 2012, I met his family. They are close, loving and supportive of each other - friendly, fun and solid. This is a staggering and sudden loss, and we are keeping Kris and his whole family close in our thoughts.

When Kris plays piano and sings with us, you enjoy just a taste of his talents.  He is a songwriter, arranger, band leader and music teacher. He started a fall tour two nights ago with his own band and they are spreading rock n' roll music from New England to PA, OH, MI, WI, MN, IL, MO and back over the next two weeks. I know his Dad will be riding along with him the whole way. He was so proud of his son. Kris' tour schedule and music is available at www.krisrodgersmusic.com

Please join us for a special Saturday evening of music in historic Bath, Maine at the Chocolate Church Arts Center!

Saturday, November 11 at 7:30 pm - The Band plays a mix of Veterans themed original songs and covers, spanning genres and tempos as we appreciate Veterans. Tom Yoder starts the show with a powerful instrumental version of the National Anthem. This show is two sets with an intermission. The Chocolate Church is a very special venue. Hope you can join us and please pass the word!  Veterans and guests are complimentary. $15 advance for others/$18 at door. Please go to www.chocolatechurcharts.org for more information.

Saturday, November 18 - The Trio performs as part of a great co-bill with Jon Pousette-Dart! This show will be held at the Franco Center in Lewiston, ME and is a benefit for Community Concepts, an important organization serving three counties in Maine. Concert tickets are $35 or you can get a VIP wine, dinner and show package for $85. The concert starts at 8 pm. Dinner portion of show at 6 pm. Tickets and info: www.community-concepts.org

Other show notes:

This Friday, I'm proud to be a part of the 50th-anniversary-in-music show of friend, neighbor, and musical hero, Jonathan Edwards. JE invited a cast that includes Livingston Taylor, Aztec Two-Step, Jon Pousette-Dart, Tom Snow and many others. The show sold out quickly (Infinity Hall, Hartford CT). 50 years is a heckuva run and Jonathan is going strong into his next 50!

The Band kicks off the Christmas season on November 30th, but I'll not get ahead of the holidays just yet! (Although Maine friends, please check out the Magical Country Christmas concert and dinner event we are a part of at Snow Pond Center for the Arts in Sidney on Dec 9th! It's going to be a great night!)

Many thanks to all of the Veterans and their families.

Many thanks to Mike Rodgers, my Dad, and the parents we miss, and for the examples they set.

Many thanks to you for reading along and for your friendship in music.

  • Last minute updates on Sept 8-Sept 9 Weekend Cruises aboard the Bay Mist in Casco Bay (one show is sold out but you can still join us on the other!
  • New Music of Dan Fogelberg concerts announced

Hello from Portland, Maine!

Every September and October, the city of Portland is visited almost daily by cruise ships and passengers, many of the ships altering the seascape of the harbor by their massive size! I have the pleasure of welcoming a lot of these passengers through music appearances. Because they aren't public events, they don't show up on my website calendar, but suffice it to say, the mornings are bustling around here!

Quickly for local friends, I wanted to give an update on this weekend's Casco Bay Lines music/party/harbor cruises in Portland. Saturday's cruise sold out a few days ago. There are tickets available for our event on Friday evening the 8th, which is a 6-9 pm sunset-music-party-cruise-the-bay benefit for a fantastic organization called United Farmer Veterans of Maine. We look forward to fun, tunes, views, beverages, dancing and listening, and to raising money to build one of 300 cottages going up to house veterans on farms around the State.

Tickets are $25 and thanks to a generous sponsorship, every dollar of that will go towards the Twenty-Two 2x4 Cottage Project Campaign.  Here's the link to buy tickets to this very special cruise event:  LINK  or you can link to it from the schedule page at Don Campbell Music.

Music of Dan Fogelberg:

While we are "up north", we are wishing our friends from and with the Fogelberg Foundation of Peoria a great weekend of music, theater, and friendship in Music City (Tennessee!) this weekend. Enjoy Nashville and one another! To stay tuned to events, programs, music and the ongoing story of Dan's great legacy, visit www.fogelberg.rocks

As we mentioned in the last note, we will be returning to the Mid-West in Spring 2018 and are actively working on shows in Northern California for later in the year. Those dates are coming soon!

The six-piece version of the Don Campbell Band looks forward to a return to Jonathan's of Ogunquit (Maine) on Saturday, October 21st to celebrate Dan's music. Other Evening of Dan Fogelberg concert events on the horizon include Saturday, January 27th in New Hartford, CT when we make our first appearance at The Parrott Delaney Tavern. Tickets will be on sale soon but take a peek at this place! We're going to have a great mid-winter time there.  We are also looking forward to a Florida concert event outdoors in Lauderhill, FL on Saturday, February 24th. It'll be held at the Lauderhill Sports Park and is brought to you by the City of Lauderhill, Florida! More info soon, but hope you'll keep the date in mind!

We are keeping Florida friends and family in mind as Hurricane Irma sweeps into the region this weekend. We are holding communities affected by Harvey in our hearts as well as those in Irma's Caribbean path.

Safe travels to all those on the move this week and thanks to all for your kindness and care,

Sound check at recent Veterans Appreciation Concert - Cornish, NH

Hello Friends,

On Friday evening, April 30th, 2010, I was driving from Murfreesboro to Franklin, TN for a guitar show. Half-way there, I had to stop and turn around; it was raining so hard, water was pooling on the highway. It happened fast. I plowed my way home through sheets of rain and standing water and didn't leave again for days. It was the start of "1000-year" flooding in the Nashville area.  It was a historic two-day rain event, bringing nearly 20 inches of rain, affecting 30 Middle Tennessee counties.

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Texas. The numbers are daunting, the damage hard to conceive and the stories just beginning. I wrote a song about the Nashville flood the weekend it was happening as Tennesseans came together to help each other like I've seen Texans doing.  "The waters may rise, but their spirits won't wash away."  -  There are many ways to show support. Here's a quick link to the American Red Cross' Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief & Donations page: American Red Cross

  • Summer Extenders!  Music-Party Cruises, including a benefit for United Farmer Veterans of Maine
  • An Evening of Dan Fogelberg Music concert event
  • Road Trips 2018
  • Upcoming Shows

On Friday and Saturday, September 8th and 9th, the Band will be performing aboard the Bay Mist as we celebrate the end of summer with two music-party cruises around Casco Bay off Portland, Maine. Hope you can join us!

Friday, September 8th is a very special cruise event. Please note special time: 6-9 pm!

United Farmer Veterans of Maine is a grass-roots organization working to make a difference for at-risk veterans. Comprising a network of 250 veteran-owned farms, UFVM works to give veterans a home and valuable skills in agriculture that can lead to a career, helping them, at the same time, contribute to one of Maine’s quickest-growing small business areas - farming.

UFVM’s “22 2X4 Cottage Project” is raising money from small donations to build 300 cottages on farms in Maine. Each cottage, constructed entirely with volunteer labor, can be built for $5,000 of materials, and will provide a home to a veteran in need.

The cottage program provides more than an alternative to shelters for homeless vets — it offers room to heal. “A lot of veterans, especially if they’re homeless, have never had a place to call their own,” says Jerry Ireland, farmer, Army veteran, and CEO/President of UFVM. “And if they’re going through struggles related to their experiences in the service, having your own space and time to work through it can make a huge difference."

Tickets for the cruise are $25 and every dollar goes to UFVM.  I'm very proud to be working with the Cape Elizabeth Class of ‘87 on this great event to raise money for United Farmer Veterans of Maine. It's a 21+ cruise with cash bar. Anyone can buy tickets, so please let friends and family know! Tickets for this cruise are only available through this ticket link: BENEFIT CRUISE  You can also access the link from the Don Campbell Band website's schedule page.

Saturday, September 9th will be a traditional party-music cruise, from 7-10 pm with tickets sold at Casco Bay Lines ticket counter or at www.cascobaylines.com ($17 adv/$20 day of cruise). Also a great night of music, views, dancing, cash bar.

An Evening of Dan Fogelberg Music!

The six-piece band will perform an Evening of Dan Fogelberg Music on Saturday, October 21st at 8 pm at Jonathan's of Ogunquit! This show sold out early last year, so don't wait to reserve your seats! Mid-April Hello From Maine

Hello Friends,

Greetings on a spring-like day in Maine! There’s still a little snow on the ground in shady places, but we’re moving in the right direction in time for Easter weekend! Four of us are gearing up for a trip to Cleveland and Ann Arbor later this month; then we’re in Rochester NH for a special tribute show; and then it’s on to May…the gateway month to outdoor concert season in New England. Bring it on!

It feels like we lose titans of music all too regularly these days…the “In Memoriam” special segments at the end of award shows are full of legends….some well-known, others less-known but well-loved by fans and friends.

Locally, another fine guitar player / musician has passed.  And although we didn't know each other, I feel a sense of brotherly loss, akin to what I'm guessing a Firefighter or Police Person feels.  Most of the musicians that I've ever met, if not all, have a generous and giving sense of respect for each other, each others' families and for the goals we all set out to achieve musically.  Even though many music styles can be quite different and the venues can be small, quaint or cavernous and large, we are all trying our best to entertain and move people, while audibly painting with different messages, tones, colors and brush strokes.

When I picture in my mind, the instrument, left behind, from a musician that has passed on, to me, it remains like the "Loyal Dog", missing its friend and master.  I then find comfort knowing that this was obviously a musician who inspired people in an audience, or quite probably a friend, or relative, niece or nephew, through his style of playing - and without a doubt, there'll be a young kid who picks up his instrument, feeling the talent of the dedicated soul who held it many times before... therefore, giving "rebirth" to the commitment and sense of musicianship buried in its patina, embedded for years, by its original caretaker, to be revealed once again, with similar, but no too distant finger-moves on the same fretboard. Rest In Peace, Ron. Thanks for inspiring me today.

Thank YOU for reading and following along and for your support of independent music. April shows follow below! Enjoy the season!

Your friend in music,

PS - Tim Byrne has captured thousands of smiles with his camera in my hometown of Scarborough, Maine, especially during the Community Chamber's Summer Concerts in the Park. Thanks Tim!

March Greetings from Maine

Hello Friends!
Spring cleaning is underway early this year as I'm clearing space to set up recording and camera gear in anticipation of shooting much needed video to share online. I hope you are enjoying the end of winter and have projects you look forward to, as well as the usual change-of-season tasks and to-do's!
I'm excited to hit the road next month with Tom, Kris and Tonya for shows in Ohio and Michigan!  Last spring's visit was a blast and we look forward to seeing the great folks who host the Green Wood Coffee House series again in Ann Arbor and to our first performance at the Music Box Supper Club in Cleveland!
We were scheduled for an encore performance at a venue in Carmel, IN on Saturday April 29th, however they've unfortunately and suddenly closed their doors...soooooo...if you live in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania or New York, our booking agent(s) are standing by and would love to fill the date with either a private party event or public performance. The four-piece includes acoustic guitar, bass guitar, fiddle/mandolin and piano. We can offer the Fogelberg show, original music, a wide range of covers, or a mix!  For inquiries, please contact Tonya at tonya@doncampbellmusic.com or 207-332-1261 for information.
The four-piece had a great trip to Florida last month for an Evening of Dan Fogelberg Music in the beautiful town of Mount Dora. It was our first visit and performance in that community and not the last!  Thanks to friends who traveled from great (and small) distances for the show.  I'll be back in Florida on March 23rd to perform with Jonathan Edwards as a special guest at his show in Bonita Springs. Joe Walsh and Tom Snow are flying south for the performance too!

If you're local or visiting the Portland area, next weekend is a busy one!  We have our rescheduled (because of early winter snow) show at One Longfellow Square in Portland next Saturday, March 18th at 8 pm. It's a terrific listening setting - beer and wine available - in a great location for pre-show dinner options. Hope you'll join us.  If you'll be out and about on St. Patrick's Day, the trio will be making the rounds playing festive Irish music from 9 am to 9 pm!  Finally, the annual Schooner Fare/Devonsquare Reunion Show takes place on Sunday, March 26th at the Holiday Inn By The Bay. This is a big afternoon of music (multiple acts and a group finale), tradition and friendship. Happy to be a part of it again this year!

Thanks for listening and please say hello anytime!

November Greetings & Thanks

Hello Friends,
On one of the most important holidays of the year, I'll be joining my neighbor Herb, a two-tour of duty Veteran, who served in Afghanistan.  Herb is battling once again, but this time against cancer. He still gets out and drives, runs errands etc, but lays rather low most of the time.  I'll be bringing pizza, beer and some soft drinks.  I'll also bring my Mom and my good friend Tim, who is also a Veteran who served in the Coast Guard.  What we'll be bringing most of all however, is our "Thanks". I hope you all enjoy the day as much as I know we will.
God Bless, and thank you for your continued support of my music.

Fall Notes:
A huge thank you to everyone who was able to join us to celebrate the music and legacy of Dan Fogelberg in October at our shows in Lewiston and Ogunquit, Maine. It was great to meet so many people from all over the country as well as share in the spirit and camaraderie with old friends. I'm excited to bring the show to Florida (details coming) in February and to the Mid-West (details coming) in April.

Thanks to the great people at Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, I've had the pleasure of participating in a few community events recently, and look forward to more ahead! If you are in the Southern Maine area, take a look at www.sbsavings.bank with branches in Saco, Biddeford, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough, South Portland and Westbrook!

I wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy month and Thanksgiving season, and again...thank you, Veterans and families.

Let the good times and music roll! What songs would you like to hear live?

Dear Friends,
We made the Labor Day weekend turn from a calendar standpoint, but the weather, tourists and traffic along the Commercial Street corridor of Portland's working waterfront signal another many weeks of seasonal buzz around Maine!
Our final full moon music and party cruise of the summer has sold out for tomorrow night but wanted to let you know that since our last email, the Trio has been booked to play in historic Dunbarton, NH this Saturday afternoon the 17th.
"Where's Dunbarton?"  some of you may wonder. Well, according to a Boston Globe report, it's the CENTER of NEW ENGLAND, based on a Boston University study using a mathematical algorithm considering the six-state region's boundaries, irregular coastlines and islands. So join the Trio - smack-dabbish in the middle of New England - from 2-4 pm at the Town Bandstand to celebrate Old Home Day in a town that was incorporated in 1765. More info on the day and town at: www.dunbartonnh.org
Speaking of history and tradition, our two Band shows at the Cumberland Fair will happen on Sunday, September 25th and Wednesday September 28th! Love Fall Fair season!

Looking Back - Looking Ahead - What's Next
Last month, we celebrated Dan Fogelberg's birthday with hundreds of fellow fans of his music in five special venues, surrounded by spectacular scenery. This is a picture taken before our show at the Blair Hill Inn on Sunday, August 14th in Greenville, Maine along Moosehead Lake.

We have many shows ahead in 2016, including Evening of Dan Fogelberg Music concerts, but I'm doing some 2017 planning and thought I'd ask for some input! I released my first original music CD, Part of Your Heart, way back in 1991 and my most recent, and 8th original music CD, The Dust Never Settles, in 2014. If you have original music song requests - songs you'd like to hear me, the trio and/or band perform live in 2017 - please send me an email at don@doncampbellmusic.com
Here are the album names and covers for a visual memory prompt! I have music from most of these available to listen to as samples on my website at www.doncampbellmusic.com/music  2017 is going to be an exciting year.  Building new shows and a new website and youtube channel!

November 24, 2015 Greeting from Don Campbell
Dear Friends,

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving week!

A year ago, I was preparing for the open heart surgery I needed to replace part of my thoracic aorta and to repair a valve.  It was scheduled for the morning after Thanksgiving; otherwise known - in retail terms - as Black Friday.

Thanks to the excellent care I received at Maine Medical Center, it was a golden Friday.

While I don't remember much about that one day in my life because I was under anesthesia or slowly coming out of it, that Friday will remain an important marker in my memory. A marker that will always sit side-by-side with Thanksgiving and serve as a good opportunity to be doubly grateful and thankful every year.

I am grateful for the people who devote so much of their lives to medical professions and to caring for the health of others. I am thankful for a very successful surgery that let me resume the profession that I love.

I'm also very thankful for and grateful to the giving and talented musicians I have shared stages, shows and miles with this past year: Marty Joyce, Tom Dyhrberg, Tom Yoder, Kris Rodgers, Travis James Humphrey, Tonya Shevenell, Sumner McKane, Andy Happel, Robby Coffin as well as Jim Lamond, Duane Edwards and Gino Grassi.  It's always special to share music with Jonathan Edwards, Tom Snow, Grace & Jerome and friends. Thanks also to Dan Merrill, Barney Martin, David Good and my Royal River Music buddies. I'm looking forward to playing with all of these terrific people again in 2016.

Many thanks to you for being a part of the music and the memories I am blessed to make.

Happy Thanksgiving,

New T-Shirts are In!

On Sale at Shows and Through The Website Store.

Original Christmas/Seasonal Music:

Giving Man is a song I wrote one holiday season about 14 years ago after a quiet act of giving and kindness struck me from where I was standing (and wrapping) at the Maine Mall. I had volunteered to gift wrap for a shift and I guess you could say that a very human connection through the true magic of Christmas gave me this song.

Christmas Lights is a song I wrote in the middle of the night after I woke from a vivid dream. In it, my Dad, who'd recently passed away, was showing me the notes to the melody and he was adamant that I got them all before I woke up. It's not easy getting through this song when I sing it live, but it's one of my favorites because of its co-writer. (Thanks, Dad).

Other originals from Christmas CD Vol 1 include Even The Snowman Knows It's Cold; Christmas All Around and SNOW DAY!  The other original from Christmas CD Vol 2 is The Snow At Arlington, in honor of the Wreaths Across America escort.

Don Campbell Music November 2015 Newsletter

Hello Friends!

On September 25th, I had the honor of interviewing four Veterans while multi-talented photographer/videographer Tim Frechette documented. Clips from these interviews will be integrated into DCB Veterans Appreciation shows and will have a home on the Don Campbell Music website. Getting together with these guys brought out a lot of emotions - from missing my Dad, my best friend and proud Marine; to feeling a profound sense of gratitude; to being full of admiration for these guys' humble and selfless dispositions; to feeling my nerves about interviewing give way to the camaraderie in the room. It was a great afternoon.  Thank you Paul Avery, Bob Brusa, Jim Campbell and David Grzyb.

Inside this Email:

1) Veterans Day/Veterans Appreciation Shows and New merchandise

2) Christmas Concert Announcements including hometown shows’ early bird ticket deals!

Hello Friends!

Wow! What a Summer we’ve had!  Great weather, music, friendships and great things on the horizon! Of special note, we successfully debuted our Veterans’ Appreciation Concerts  at the historic Deertrees Theatre in Harrison, ME and another gem of a showplace - The Maudslay Arts Center in Newburyport, MA. Being able to say, “Thank You” to the men and women who've served through music means a lot to me.  Moving audience members through songs is emotionally rewarding every time I strap on a guitar and sing. This new show is a particularly powerful testament to that connection.

In my next email, I'll have exciting details about the upcoming Veterans Day in November and the shows we have planned that week. I'll let you know about a special themed CD bundle we are offering that includes a donation of a CD to a Veterans group. I'll also have news on interviews we're doing with Veterans which will become part of a video presentation we've built into the show in venues where we can project onto a screen.

In other show news, I’m also very excited to get back to performing our Christmas music!  Last year, I had to “bow" out (pardon the pun) as I had undergone major surgery.  But I’m back in full swing and am ready to tune up the band for these fun, family offerings that welcome the festive holiday (and snow!) season.

I hope if you're in the region that you can join us for at least one more show in 2015 before we hit the New Year! We are working on visiting other parts of the country again in 2016!

I'm happy to introduce/re-introduce Sue Brusa and Bob Brusa as tour sponsors this issue, so take a look below to learn about them and what they are doing this fall!

Thanks for your continued, friendship, love and support.  It means a lot to me and my bandmates.

Thank You Sue & Bob Brusa! For the twelfth consecutive year, Atkinson NH resident Sue Brusa, an independent distributor of RELIV, is a tour sponsor of the Don Campbell Band. Helping support our new Veterans Appreciation show and development efforts, Sue is partnering with her husband Bob Brusa. Sue and Bob help people in many exciting ways and their energy is contagious.

"After being a country dancer for over 20 years, I met the Don Campbell Band at one of their shows in Stratham, NH, and I was hooked forever on their fabulous music. Knowing that they were different than just a "weekend gig", I started following them because they were extraordinarily talented. I loved that Don changed people's lives with his music just as I changed people's lives with our business of patented nutrition.

When I had the opportunity to become a sponsor, I knew then "it was a match made in heaven" and have never looked back in 12 years. Together we're impacting so many lives, helping people realize their dreams through better health and a more enriched lifestyle."

Sue's husband Bob is also in the business around his duties serving as Chairman of the Board for The Warrior Connection. Bob, a Green Beret and Special Forces Army Veteran, is actively involved with the organization's mission to connect Veterans to Themselves, Families and Communities through specialized retreats.

For more information, contact Sue or Bob Brusa at 603-490-0160 or 603-401-8991 or through their website, www.lunasinstrong.com
